Texas Homestead Exemption Guide

A homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary residence. It is one of the most important permanent ways to lower your school and local property taxes.

General residential homestead

If the property is your principal residence on January 1, you can apply for the general homestead exemption. It removes a portion of value from taxation (school districts must offer at least a minimum exemption; many local jurisdictions add more).

Over-65 and disability exemptions

Additional exemptions are available if you are 65 or older or disabled. These often include a tax ceiling on school taxes for over-65 homeowners. Application is made through your county appraisal district.

When to apply

Apply as soon as you qualify. Late applications can sometimes still be accepted for prior years within limited windows, but the safest approach is to file promptly after you move in or turn 65.

Homestead vs. protest

Exemptions lower the taxable value. A protest challenges whether the appraised market value is correct. Many owners benefit from both: a fair appraisal and every exemption they qualify for.
